In 2006 they fell out of the sky in large numbers. That year I ended up with a big collection of bee corpses. I was fascinated by their beauty and vulnerability. Since I have an almost biological interest in nature, I started a study. What does a bee life look like and what is the cause of this massive bee mortality? Which influence does the bee have on a human life and how is it the other way around? This is what I tried to encapture in some sort of Gesamtkunstwerk. This resulted in an installation about the life of the bee and the project “Ode to the Bee”.

The installation consists of ten greatly enlarged bee portraits displayed on easels in the shape of a bee cell. Rik Fennis composed music for each individual painting. The spectator stands in the middle of the cell and is completely surrounded by giant bees.

The project “Ode to the Bee” took place in the Hague. It was a day with lectures, workshops, movies, bee books, honey massages, a performance from Boilerhouse, my bee installation and other works of art by various artists.
